8-04-07 Howdee - 6 Month Update

It is almost exactly 6 months since Howdee arrived and here is Howdee now! Howdee is just the sweetest mare, she is very calm always, and is quite a big girl now. Her rehab is complete, and Howdee is ready to be adopted out as a companion horse. I am so happy i could get her to where she is now, and thankful for all the volunteers who have helped to bring her along, with much love.

Howdee is responding very well to her supplements and the extra special care she is receiving. Howdee thanks all the volunteers who groom her, graze her, keep her injured leg clean, and let her know she is loved!

Bella welcomes Howdee, our newest rescue to Long Island on February 11th, 2007. She was upstate New York when she was purchased from a backyard barn after learning about her neglect. Thank you Christine from Quarter Acre Rescue Ranch, for the details on Howdee and quarantine for this sweet mare.

Howdee is in her mid-teens, and had been very neglected for quite a while. She was caught up in barbed wire, and that injury to her leg went un-treated for a few months, until we got her. She has been vet checked twice already, once while in quarantine to make sure the bone was not infected and again the week she arrived.

Howdee has tested positive for epm (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis) a disease that attacks the nervous system, but can be treated with medication. She will have to be evaluated again to determine where other injuries may have occurred and could also possibly have a spinal injury, which now is a strong possibility.

She is comfortable for now, and supplements we are giving her are helping her pick up some weight. Blood work has also shown that she is very anemic, and she is receiving extra supplements. She will have to be checked again by our vet to monitor her progress. This is a long haul for this poor mare, but she is loving all the attention, which she so deserves.

Due to all of her special needs, her bills will be ongoing for quite awhile.
Donations are needed to help with her recovery any denomination is greatly appreciated.
