Last year over 100 thousand horses in this country were slaughtered. The horse meat does not get used for dog food or to feed the starving. It is in fact, exported, to be served up as a delicacy in France, Belgium and other European countries.

Presently there are 3 slaughterhouses in this country they are:

- Beltex Corporation, located in Fort Worth, Texas - Closed - January 2007.
- Dallas Crown Inc., located in Kaufman, Texas- Closed - March 2007
- Cavel International Inc., located in De Kalb Illinois

Due to the closing of the above slaughterhouses- More horses are being shipped to Canada and Mexico.

The trip to the slaughterhouses are extremely cruel and the horses last days of life are horrific. The trucks that transport them make many stops along the way to ensure a full load. Horses are literally packed into trailers designed for pigs and cows, some are double high (which are illegal), With no warmth, food or water, sometimes for days, many arrive starved, dehydrated half frozen or dead.

By law, the horses are supposed to be unconscious while being slaughtered. The horses are stunned with a “Captive Bolt Gun” to the skull, but some horses are improperly stunned and are still conscious, before being strung up by one leg to have their throats slit. They await their turn terrified, panicked and scrambling for a way out, smelling and sensing the inevitable.

This is a sad reality in our country. How can our government allow this?

It was this very animal that helped build America! Horses have plowed our fields, carried us through war, been our transportation, helped our handicapped and given millions of people countless hours of loyalty and pleasure.
