People think that the slaughter of these horses is thinning out the herd, this is not the case, the horses slaughtered make up only one (1) percent of the horses in this country.

In spite of contrary claims, the great majority of the horses slaughtered are not old, sick, crippled or unwanted, but instead, are young, healthy American horses, including wild horses, pregnant mares and mares with very young foals at their side.

A 2001 study conducted by slaughter industry expert Temple Grandin shows that 84% of the horses slaughtered are under 8 years of age and are healthy, that 96% of them have NO physical problems, 72 % were sound of "limb", and that 7 % were young but extremely neglected.

Temple also stated 51% of the horses were bruised due to kicking and biting.

Data from the USDA show that between 92%-96% of the horses slaughtered are in good or excellent condition. According to Dallas Crown's (one of the slaughterhouses) price list a skinny, old or ill horse is not worth their time and YOU must pay a $50 fee for its slaughter. The "old, sick horse argument" is another MYTH.

Horse meat is eaten by elites in Europe and Asia. Thinking that these elites would pay up to $20 per pound for the meat of a sick, old animal is ridiculous. Horse slaughter is all about greed, pure and simply; it does not provide any service to the horse industry. This entire industry is only .001 % of the entire meat industry, it is completely foreign owned, and pays NO corporate taxes or export tariffs. The horse slaughter industry is economically insignificant.
